How to restart after a missed week
A missed week is just a week. Here’s what happens to your streak, why the next week starts fresh, and how to make it easier to hit.
GuideWhy NoTestudo shows hours and dollars, not points
There’s no score in NoTestudo, and no points. Progress shows up in real units: money saved, time saved and time invested. Here’s why.
GuideMissed a week? Start the next one
A week that went sideways doesn’t erase the ones before it. How to restart without the guilt spiral, whether the goal is fewer nights out or more gym mornings.
MagazineA slow animal’s case for small wins
Streaks, badges and the first clear day: the NoTestudo turtle on why small wins count, and why one missed day doesn’t undo a habit.

“Turtle eyebrow: raised.” I drove past.
Drive-thru line again on the way home. The widget said “Turtle eyebrow: raised.” and I felt so judged by a cartoon that I pulled out of the line. Went home and made a grilled cheese. Last time the fries won. This time the turtle did.
Fast FoodMissed my coffee goal this week. Starting again Monday
Five coffee shop visits when my goal was two. Midterms happened. Not beating myself up, just resetting. The week starts fresh Monday and so do I.
Coffee RunsSkipped Friday, and my week still says 4 of 5
Missed Friday’s lecture. My weekly summary just says four of five classes. No red X, no guilt trip, just the number. Going Monday regardless. There’s a quiz.
ClassMy turtle told me to put the fries down slowly
I have the turtle on Playful, and I was sitting in the drive-thru line on the way home when the widget said “Put the fries down slowly.” I laughed so hard I sent my sister a screenshot. I still got the fries. Next time, maybe.
Fast FoodWent to a club meeting alone for the first time
My goal this month is “see people in person twice a week,” and I’d been counting the same two friends over and over. So I went to a board game club meeting by myself. I almost left in the first five minutes. I stayed for two hours. Someone taught me a game I’m still thinking…
SocialStudied at home all week, so my library hours look tiny
My weekly summary says one hour at the library. In reality I studied a ton, just at my kitchen table. It can see the library, not the studying, which is fair. Might add a check-in for home study days so the week looks more like what happened.
StudyRainy week, still made two of four walks
It rained five days out of seven. Made it to the park twice, once in a full rain jacket, which was kind of great. Two of four. Not the week I planned, but not nothing.
OutdoorsOrdered a soda at the bar and nobody cared
A friend’s birthday on Saturday, at a bar. My goal is no bars on weeknights, so technically it was allowed, but I wanted to see if I could just not drink. Ordered a soda with lime. Nobody asked. Nobody cared. I was the only one who remembered the whole night, which was its own…
SobrietyWent twice this week. Starting over Monday
Had a rough week and went twice. My streak is back to the start. I’m not going to pretend it didn’t happen. But last month I would have gone five times, so I’m counting this as information, not a disaster.
CannabisTwo coffee shop visits this week, both with friends
My goal is the coffee shop at most twice a week. This week both visits were catching up with friends, and that’s exactly what I want coffee shops for. The solo 3 p.m. “I deserve this” runs were the ones adding up.
Coffee RunsFirst week under my fast food limit
My goal is fast food at most once a week. Did it once, on Friday, with friends, and enjoyed every bite. It was never about zero. It was about choosing it.
Fast FoodIs it weird that I like the walk to the gym more than the gym?
Twelve minutes each way, past the big lawn, headphones in. By the time I get there I’m already in a better mood. The workout itself is fine. The walk is the part I’d miss.
FitnessLeaving my phone in my pocket on walks
Trying something: no podcast, no music, phone stays in my pocket for the whole walk. The first two times were weirdly hard. The third time I noticed there are about six kinds of birds by the pond. Anyone else do phone-free walks?
OutdoorsMy 24-hour rule for anything over $20
If I want something over $20, I put it in a note and wait a day. Most things I don’t even remember by the next morning. It pairs well with my mall goal, since the note means I don’t need to go “look at it in person.”
